Amazon.com There can be no question that as an interpreter of the Tchaikovsky concerto, Bell is solidly in the grand manner. His playing is warm, lyrical, spontaneous, and imaginative, full of caprice and fantasy yet technically fastidious, with everything solidly in place. He indulges in a good deal of portamento, but the use he makes of this device is judicious and unfailingly expressive. Where lesser violinists have a tendency to press, Bell is steady--and while one might wish for a little more drive in the concerto's spacious opening movement, he delivers fireworks aplenty in the finale. The same virtues inform the companion account of the Wieniawski D-minor concerto. With Vladimir Ashkenazy on the podium, the Cleveland Orchestra is simply outstanding: glorious in the big moments, with burnished brass, a meaty string tone and impeccable ensemble. London's 1988 recording is satisfyingly rich and well-balanced. --Ted LibbeyASIN: B0000041US
