Amazon.com Lenny Kravitz is still obsessed with the '70s, and for good reason: he's found endless inspiration in the work of Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, and a decade's worth of soul men. Kravitz hasn't lost the funk on 5, but the sound here drifts dangerously close to the Me decade's shallowest end, when disco seemed to rob R&B of its soul. So the passion Kravitz has shown on early albums is strangely diluted (aside from the album-closing epic "Can We Find a Reason?"). 5 is the singer's first foray into digital technology, but despite a few modern effects at the edges, he's doing essentially the same as before--only colder. --Steve Appleford Product description 5 CD VIRGIN, 845605, 13 Track Review ...5, for the most part, is on a funk trip ... Most of the tracks on 5 lack the heartfelt emotion emitted on "Thinking of You." A moving tribute to his departed mother, Roxie Roker ... the song soars high above the clouds with sentiment.... Not that [Lenny] Kravitz has ever been a true lyric master.... Thus, it's good for him that he still, on occasion, has the ability to kick ass musically. That's the only way to explain "You're My Flavor." Despite played out, your-love-is-like-a-drug metaphors and corny one-liners ... the jam is pure unadulterated fun. Say what you will about Sir Kravitz, the man still has an uncanny knack for kicking out honest-to-goodness head nodders.... Teetering between rock god and god-awful, Lenny and his funk flunks should have taken the Fifth. At least he didn't rap. -- Vibe Here we are on the brink of the millennium, but nobody's told Lenny Kravitz, who's still cranking out pedestrian Prince-style glam-funk like it's 1978. But as rote as Kravitz's music has become ... it's still better than his lyrics. -- Spin His recasting of old sources hits on some fetching hooks and beats along the way. Now, if he could just get over his brain-dead peacenik lyrics, Kravitz might complete the transition from pariah to guilty pleasure. -- Entertainment Weekly [F]or this collection of highly derivative funk-rock ... the CD again seems to mimic the music of others, including Sly Stone and Rick James.... -- PeopleASIN: B000006048
