Product description Comedy series focusing on the goings on at a Canadian television newsroom. Genre: Television Rating: NR Release Date: 14-FEB-2006 Media Type: DVD Amazon.com Before David Brent (Ricky Gervais), there was George Findlay (Ken Finkleman). Like The Office, The Newsroom is a comedy that looks like a documentary. Set in a Toronto TV station, the characters may be better educated than their UK counterparts, but they can be just as petty and immature. None more so than self-obsessed, buck-passing, penny-pinching news director Findlay. Eight years have passed since the first season. As the second begins, his wife and mistress have left him. He's seeing a therapist and taking anti-depressants. To make matters worse, airhead anchor Jim Walcott (Made in Canada's Peter Keleghan, channeling Ted Knight) has just made the move to American TV, so Findlay must find a replacement. The candidate he has in mind is as attractive as she is qualified. Better yet, she's single. Would it be unethical to ask her out? Back in the States, Walcott's morning gig gets off to a good start, but New York is a tough town, and the next thing he knows he's back on a flight to Canada. And that's just the first episode ("America, America"). Naturally, Findlay has not "grown" from these experiences. The only thing that's changed is his age, and death stalks him at every turn. In the remaining 12 episodes, he contends with the terminal illnesses of an old friend ("Reality Strikes"), an employee ("Death 1, George 0"), and an employee's pet ("An Enormous Waste of Time"). Guest stars include No Logo author Naomi Klein ("Pushy Moneygrubbing Cosmopolitan Racist") and 24 's Alberta Watson (several episodes). The second season follows writer/director/producer Finkleman's Foreign Objects and the TV movie Escape From the Newsroom and was renewed for a third and final season. --Kathleen C.
