A bouquet of music for string orchestra by English composers who are relatively neglected in America. Of the three composers, Frank Bridge is probably the best known to music audiences, largely because of Benjamin Britten's "Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge," an homage by Britten to the man who was his first tutor. Bridge's "Suite for String Orchestra" is a daffodil from the composer best known for his works for full orchestra (The Sea, Summer, Cherry Ripe). Hubert Parry, aka Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, 1st Baronet, is from the generation before Bridge and Butterworth, and so his music reflects a more conservative cast. How conservative may be understood by the fact that his most famous work is the hymn "Jerusalem," from the poem by William Blake with the title line "And did those feet in ancient time." Parry's work in this set is "Lady Radnor's Suite," a work commissioned by the Lady of the title, and conducted by her at its premier as well. This piece is a well-tended rose from Milady's garden. George Butterworth was cut down in full bloom, a casualty of the First World War. He left two enduring works: "A Shropshire Lad," and "The Banks of Green Willow." Folk-song based, these pieces add a sprig of wildflowers to the collection. All-in-all, a delightful evocation of bucolic England, lovingly performed by William Boughton and the English String Orchestra.ASIN: B001R91EA8
